English Language Arts: Literary Focus 30S

In this English course we encourage students to read widely and to develop their critical thinking skills. Students will study a wide variety of literature including novels, Shakespearean and modern dramas, short stories, poetry, essays, and articles. Students will explore the longer writing formats including short stories, reports, reviews, and formal essays. We expect a high level of participation, preparation, and performance, both written and oral.

English Language Arts: Comprehensive Focus 40S

In this course students learn to think critically and independently while developing their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing. Students become increasingly proficient in using language to communicate effectively to an audience, express themselves clearly, and select appropriate forms for their purposes. They learn to manage data and information efficiently, and to work collaboratively in small groups. The emphasis of the course is 50% transactional and 50% literary.

Students will study the aesthetic use of language through a study of literature and develop their creative skills as poets, playwrights and film makers. Students will enhance their skills in reading and appreciating a range of forms, genres, and media. The emphasis of the course is 70% literary and 30% transactional.

This is an introductory course to computers with practical application in planning, designing and producing finished work such as: Flyers, Memos, Ads, Art, Business Letters, Resumes, Posters, Charts, Graphs, Budgets, and Payroll Salaries etc. The course offers the opportunity to become competent with basic skills in using:

Law 40S

Law affects us all. This course explains the Canadian Civil and Criminal systems, legal aid, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Young Offenders Act. Students can find out about their rights and responsibilities with respect to marriage, divorce and adoption of children in the Family Law unit. A variety of guest speakers will be invited to class including lawyers, judges, and law enforcement officers. Field trips may include visits to the Provincial Law Courts, Traffic Court and the Manitoba Legislature.

Pre-Calculus Math 30S

Grade 11 Pre-calculus is designed for students who intend to study calculus and related mathematics as part of their post-secondary education. The course is designed primarily as a high-level study of theoretical mathematics. Topics include: quadratic functions, trigonometry, algebra, geometry, consumer mathematics, logic/proof, and functions.

Pre-Calculus Math 40S

Consumer Math 40S

Consumer Math Grade 12 consists of two half-credit courses. The course is very practical in its application to everyday life. Consumer Mathematics 40S Part V consists of four modules covering personal finance, government finances, design and measurement, and statistics. Consumer Mathematics 40S Part VI also has four modules covering investments, career life project, income tax, and variations and formulas.

Biology 40S

This course provides students an opportunity to learn about 3 fundamental concepts in biology; biodiversity, genetics and evolution. The biodiversity section will expose students to the wide variety of organisms that exist and how biologists organize them into groups. The genetics section will explore what genes are, how genes work and how they are passed from parent to offspring. The evolution section teaches students about what evolution is, how it works and why scientists believe that it has occurred.

Physics 30S

Physics 30S is designed for students planning on pursuing post-secondary studies in science, engineering or technology. It is a demanding course requiring excellent mathematics and problem solving skills. This course prepares students for 40S physics where the topics are expanded upon.
